The golden rules of sunbathing

The golden rules of sunbathing

Summer is slowly coming to an end, but we still have quite a few weeks ahead that we can take advantage of in terms of sunbathing. But no one should think that just because we’re nearing the end of August, we need to pay less attention when sunbathing.

About the types and effects of UV radiation we wrote at the beginning of summer, and in these articles we also drew attention to the fact that not only in summer, but certainly throughout the year, it is worth paying attention to the use of sunscreen. But what else should we pay attention to if we want to sunbathe and tan specifically without harmful side effects?

The golden rules of sunbathing

Don’t lie out in the sun between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

It’s true that this has been a boredom motto for dermatologists to the point of boredom, but it can’t be said enough and stressed enough about how harmful sunbathing in the afternoon is. Not only because we can burn to roast red or because it can damage the beauty of the skin and lead to premature wrinkling in the long run, but it is certainly during this period that UVA and UVB rays are most intense.

Sun

protection at the highest level It follows from the previous point that the second and one of the most important rules is to use the right sunscreen. What is this certain adequate light protection? It’s a little different for everyone, although the use of 50-factor sunscreens is definitely recommended in the initial stages of sunbathing. To learn more about SPF , what it means and which factor number is best for you, read our previous post on it. With regard to sun protection, however, it is important to mention that it is worth paying attention not only in the warmer months, but also in spring and autumn, and even in winter, for example when skiing, we should also have an indispensable companion.

 Graduality

This is a rule that also cannot be drawn enough attention. Not only can we protect our skin with sunscreen, but it’s good to know that we also have our own defense system. And that is the tan itself. Melanin in the skin is a type of dye that actually absorbs UV rays. However, this is only true if we can achieve enough tan gradually, without sunburn, so it is very important that when we start sunbathing, we do it in the early morning or late afternoon, taking care of the sun. Once we’ve got a little color, we can reduce the number of sunscreen factors and even sunbathe for longer periods of time. However, the first point, ie the ban on sunbathing between 11 am and 3 pm, must still be observed!

Hydration

Not only do we pay attention to the external protection of our skin, but we also protect our health from the inside. And the best way to do this is to consume enough water when sunbathing. Sweating increases during the day, so we lose a huge amount of fluid, which must be replenished, otherwise we have to reckon with symptoms of dehydration such as headaches, lethargy, dry skin.

In addition to the above tips, don’t forget about UV-filtered sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats and, of course, increased protection for children’s skin . The latter are always protected with a 50-factor cream and the creaming is repeated frequently, as paddling, showering and towels will wear the applied layer and thus the protection will not be complete.
